COPD

This leaflet aims to raise awareness of COPD and the lesser known health risks of smoking, and to encourage people to take steps to reduce their risk of COPD, chiefly through quitting smoking.

The description and the way the leaflet is set out - it’s good. It covers everything and explains what the procedures are and not to be afraid to go to the Doctor, what they will ask you to do and not to be afraid.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the most common respiratory diseases in the UK and causes 30,000 deaths a year. The world health organisation estimates that COPD will be the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2020. The main cause of this incurable disease is smoking – which accounts for four in five cases. Although COPD is the fourth largest killer disease in the UK after heart disease, stroke and lung cancer it remains a relatively unknown entity amongst the public and can often be confused with other chronic diseases such as asthma.

DPP health information resources will focus on raising awareness of COPD and the associated risks from smoking. It will offer general information on COPD, it’s prevalence, who is affected and how the disease is diagnosed. It also offers practical advice on getting tested for COPD, and on giving up smoking. The information will help and support health professionals when giving health education messages in relation to lung health and smoking, for example, as part of routine health checks or smoking cessation clinics.
